Unit 11 - Preparation for Progression in Creative Media Production

Film Roles

A film director is the most important person on a film production, they are the main person in charge of bringing the film to life, whether that be from making creative decisions and staying on-schedule. The director is also the one who has to approve of other creative decisions from other people, mostly a producer.

A screenplay writer is the person who is charged with writing out how the film will play out, these usually go through a lot of revisions that include both different plot-beats and even characters, and when the final draft gets approved, that is called a 'locked' script, which is used for filming the production.

An editor is another important person in defining the final film. Editing usually occurs during principal photography and usually takes months to create, sometimes even a year depending on the film. Multiple cuts are made for a production before being refined into a final cut, which is the one that is commercially released.

Journalism Talk

Around the same week as the Photography presentation, two journalists from West London visited us and made us do a workshop where we were given a list of headlines and we had to choose 3 important and 3 non-important ones. This was in an attempt to show off differing opinions from people, specifically on how different people have different opinions on the definition of important.

Photography Presentation

At the start of December, a photographer who told us he was a former student at Stanmore College. He showed us some of his work that he did for organisations like Barnet FC, which he is currently working for.  He also lectured us on his career on how he got to where he was, starting from finishing College and partaking in different photography jobs for magazines like Vogue until eventually breaking out into the industry.

University Research
Back in October, I attended 3 universities open day, two which were on the same weekend. The one's I attended were University of Sussex, University of Hertfordshire, and Middlesex University.

The opening days mostly consisted of touring the specific media department, getting to look at the different rooms that house different production types, the ones that stood out were the holy art room in Sussex and a motion capture studio in Middlesex, which was very interesting to be a bit involved in the process of how motion capture comes together.

Out of the universities that I went to for their opening day, University of Hertfordshire was the one that was the most interesting for me, one main reason was due to how the lecture in the filmmaking panel talked about how many film studios there are in Hertfordshire, such as Elstree Studios and Warner Bros. Studio Leavesden in Watford, and how students at this university sometimes gets employed to work inside the studio on a Hollywood production. This could be beneficial for me for not only work experience, but also how a Hollywood set usually works all the other cogs that go in to a final shot in a film.

Another reason Hertfordshire impacted me the most was that I was brought into a workshop that involved setting up a film shot, I unfortunately didn't partake mostly out of fear, but from what I saw, I learnt a lot from how a shot is set up, learning stuff like focus pulling and clapperboard duties. This two reasons helped convince me Hertfordshire was a perfect place for my future in filmmaking.

My Universities

These are the 5 universities that I'm strongly considering going to, most of them are outside of London expect for Kingston University, which is another university that I'm strongly wanting to get enrolled in. I didn't put down Middlesex University because while it was nice to have a university closer to home, I felt it was a bit necessary to also be independent and learn how to live like an adult instead of relying on my parents for everything. University of Kent and Reading are also present on the list, though they were mostly added just to reach the 5 university limit, however, I made sure to do research about which University I felt had a strong film department that would be beneficial for my future.
